Cricket research

Heading of my journal article

While I was an academic, I realised that the research methods that I used in my vision research were perfectly suited to the measurement of people's performance at umpires' decisions in cricket. I did a study of LBW (leg-before-wicket) decisions, which resulted in a paper in a journal. It was also covered by the Daily Telegraph, and resulted in an article in an umpires' magazine. An article suggesting a change to the laws of cricket

A batsman losing his wicket

Cricket umpires come in for a lot of flak if their decisions are shown by television replays to be "wrong". I believe that a simple change to the wording of the laws of cricket would solve the problem. It would also resolve the issue of whether a batsman should "walk" (voluntarily head for the pavilion) when they know they are out but are mistakenly not given out by the umpire.
