Pages without parents

This is the home for pages that don't belong anywhere in the rest of the site. It's a rather empty and lonely orphanage at the moment - the echoing corridors are trodden by only three occupants - but it will no doubt fill up.

Terrible taps

A tap Some taps dispense hot water, and some taps dispense cold water. It is useful to know which tap is which, but I have noticed recently that tap designers seem to deliberately hide the blue and red markers on taps. It's a cynical ploy to make the taps look sleek in the shops - but people who are unfamiliar with the taps (in hotels for example) suffer for it later.

Cricket writing and research

A picture of a cricket ball I think that cricket is a fascinating sport. When I was an academic I did some research on the subject of umpires' LBW decisions in cricket. This spawned not only a paper in a journal, but an article in a more popular style, and the Daily Telegraph ran a story about my work.

A wartime letter

A few months ago I found a letter, written to my father by a German prisoner of war shortly after the end of the Second World War. Reading the letter, I was moved to find that the author and my father, despite being officially enemies, were good friends. To see if I can find out a little more, I'm including this page in the hope that somebody relevant comes across it.
